Host a Party

Okay, not a party — a forum. Individuals or small groups of people (from a lab, department, or organization) can host 1- or 2-week discussions. These might take the form of:

  •
    • An “open house” with members of a lab or organization (e.g., Engineers Without Borders, The Foresight Institute). The hosts can break the ice by talking among themselves about their work, and site members can join in with questions or comments.

    • “journal club” on an exciting finding and the interesting possibilities it opens up. Here again, the hosts can get the conversation started talking among themselves about why this work is exciting or innovative, and let site members join in.

    • puzzle, brain teaser, or other challenge. This could be a one-time event or a longer term engagement. Last semester, the JHU Math Club hosted a wildly popular forum of math problems, history, and brain teasers.

    • virtual tour of a lab or facility

    • A demonstration or Q&A about a product (software, simulation, etc.)

    • Other activities you might suggest

Let Us (Re)Publish You

Let us reprint or link to things you’ve written that would be of interest to our audience. Or write something specifically for Cogito. We’d be especially interested in articles about your experiences as a young scientist/mathematician, including reflections about your experiences and choices, with the wisdom of hindsight (e.g. “Things I’m Glad I Did, Things I Wish I’d Done”, “The Agony of Indecision (aka The Curse of Being Really Good at Many Things)”).

All articles published on the site may be visible to members only or to the public - your choice.

If you are blogging about science, please let us know.
